Grayton Beach was settled in 1885 and never quite domesticated: sandy lanes, a gallery that is literally a fence, a 2,000 plus acre state park next door, and a bar the whole county lines up for. This site covers this one town, straight.

About those trucks on the beach
The first thing every visitor asks about is the 4x4 rolling down the sand at walking pace, rods in the bed, dog in the cab. Here is the whole story, sourced: Walton County allows permitted vehicles on exactly two beaches, Grayton and Inlet Beach, and the permits belong to full-time residents, property owners, and registered voters only, issued through Walton County Code Compliance's annual lottery at $135 for one year. Applications open in April. Visitors cannot get one at any price, and the county's tourism bureau still lists fishing charters launching straight off this sand, the way this working beach has done things for generations.
We consider the trucks the town's founding document on wheels: Grayton was settled in 1885, the sand was its front yard and boat ramp long before anyone said the word vacation here, and the lottery is what survives of that.
